Installation:
Floppy Based ONE.PAGE.RESUME Systems: The program and data files
necessary to run ONE.PAGE.RESUME are small and should fit on one
diskette. Please make a backup copy of the ONE.PAGE.RESUME disk.
This way if you have a problem, you will have a back up available.
Hard Disk ONE.PAGE.RESUME Systems: Create a sub directory off the
root called "OPR" with the make directory (MD) DOS command.
C:> MD OPR <enter>
Then change the current directory(CD) to "OPR" and use the copy
command from the a: to c: drive.
C:> CD OPR <enter>
C:> COPY A:*.* C: <enter>
Hard disk users may want to create a batch file to take them
automatically to the "OPR" sub directory and execute the
"OPR.EXE" program file.
CONFIG.SYS:
ONE.PAGE.RESUME requires the following entries:
FILES = 20
BUFFERS = 15
There may be a need for additional tinkering with your DOS
environment based on the equipment and software installed. You
should consult with your system manuals for more information.
2
Compatibility with Versions 1.0, 2.0
ONE.PAGE.RESUME 2.1 uses the same files as previous versions of
RESUME SHOP. The difference is that ONE.PAGE.RESUME has four work
paragraphs and two educational paragraphs. This will cause your
last education entry (third) to drop off previous versions. This
feature was added at the request of registered users.
pgm errors (run time errors)
This version of ONE.PAGE.RESUME has been tested in an attempt to
identify all the bugs that might of crept into the program. Occasionally
one slips by and a message ( pgm error ###### ) appears on the screen.
Something serious is wrong. Most of the time this is caused by
someone erasing one of the files ONE.PAGE.RESUME needs to function.
Please make a backup so you will be able to reload all the required
files.
The Design:
ONE.PAGE.RESUME is written to be used much like a menu you would see
in a restaurant when ordering dinner. Instead of telling the
waitress your order, you move the light bar to the selection
you would like to execute. For example, if you want to add
or change information regarding your educational background, you
use the arrow keys to move the light bar and hit enter when you are
on the education selection.
gSOFT built ONE.PAGE.RESUME with the novice user in mind. It is our
goal to have the computer do as much of the work as it can. We
have kept the rules limited and the flow is consistent with how you
would construct a resume without a computer. ONE.PAGE.RESUME has a
WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) field editor so type just
as you would want to see the text on your resume. There is nothing
you can do with this product which can hurt your computer so feel free
to experiment with the software. Any restrictions or warnings are
identified below.
The Don'ts:
o Don't delete any files shipped with the program disk. A list of
these files is available at the end of this document.
o Don't try to type outside any of the highlighted areas reserved
for input. ONE.PAGE.RESUME is set up to read only what is inside the
highlighted entry area. (it shouldn't let you anyway!!)
The Do's:
o Make a copy of the program disk before you start the product.
This way if you erase a file by mistake you still have our
original program intact.
3
o Do experiment and let us know if there is anything additional
you would like to see or something you would like changed.
o Do make multiple resumes tailored to fit the requirements of the
job you are interested in.
o If you have any problems or suggestions, please let gSOFT know
and we will be glad to make the changes available to register
users.
About Resumes:
Resumes are the first impression you will be giving a
potential employer. You must be informative and concise
(this is why ONE.PAGE.RESUME creates a one page resume).
Identify the points in your background and experience that
are relevant to the position you're applying for. Learn a
little about the company and their products and services.
Don't be afraid to have several resumes for different types
of jobs with different employers. You should target you
resume to the firm your interested in. Be modest don't
oversell your accomplishments or come off as a bragger.
Identify the successes. Make sure your sentences are to the
point and watch grammar and spelling. Have someone else read
your resume and give you feedback on the format and clarity.
A cover letter should also be supplied to provide a personal
introduction to the employer. A sample cover letter
is provided on the ONE.PAGE.RESUME disk called COVER.LET.
Tutorial
Starting out:
First Time Users:
If it is your first time using ONE.PAGE.RESUME, it is a good idea
to look over the tutorial. When you have familiarized
yourself with its conventions and general operation, start
with "Work on Resume" from the the main menu and move around to
other menu selections to see what they do. Do not be alarmed to
see data already keyed into the data entry areas. This was put
there to give you an idea of what should be inputted into the entry.
Just type over the entry or space out what you want deleted. Omit
any menu selections or screens which do not apply. ONE.PAGE.RESUME will work
around the omissions and format your final resume accordingly.
4
For experienced users go ahead and treat this menu driven
program like other menu driven systems. There is
nothing mysterious or technical about using ONE.PAGE.RESUME.
To begin Type: C > OPR [resume_filename]
resume_filename = the name of the resume file you wish to
load. This is optional. The default resume is called
RESUME.
Navigating through ONE.PAGE.RESUME Menus:
ONE.PAGE.RESUME uses pop-up menus to display options. To select
an option, use the cursor keys to put the light bar over the
desired option and hit enter. ONE.PAGE.RESUME provides ample
HELP screens to guide you through the product.
Data Entry Editor Keys:
Valid Resume Keys: A-Z special characters upper and lower case
up arrow / down arrow: invalid keys for editing
right arrow: moves cursor one position to right
left arrow: moves cursor one position to left
alt - h: help screens
esc: immediate exit no save
cntrl-end: erase entire field
f1 thru f10 invalid keys for editing
Work On Resume Selection
Personal Information
Personal information is the data which identifies your name, where
your live, how you can be reached by phone. Key in all relevant
information. ONE.PAGE.RESUME will take care of all the necessary
formatting.
5
Educational Data:
Key in all educational experience which is relevant to the job
your applying for. Just because there is room for more than one
education entries enter only those which will help you get
your job. For example, don't key in your junior high school just
to have two entries if you are applying for a job with a large
corporation. An entry for high school and/or college will be
plenty.
Work Experience:
Work experience is important when applying for a job. Since it is
based on personal experiences, ONE.PAGE.RESUME can not do much more
than guide you through the necessary information. It would be
wise to read over the section "About Resumes" since the
description entries on the work experience is where this will be
the most help.
Note: High School Students- Be sure to list three work experience
entries even if it was for free or just mowing the neighbors lawn.
Showing you are a reliable worker is the best information you can
supply your prospective employer.
References :
References can be an important clincher when your job experience
closely matches the new position you are trying to get. Make
sure the reference knows he/she is a reference on your resume and
make sure you know that they are going to give you a good
reference.
References can be left out and provided upon the request of the
employer. If this is the case, enter "Upon Request" in the 1st
reference name entry.
Job Objective:
Importance of Job Objective is much like the reference selection.
It is optional but it is important but can sometimes be ommited.
If you use the job objective sure that you make your objective
concise and well written since it is the first part of your resume
that the reader will see. Be careful to check the spelling in the
job objective. It is a good idea to create a job objective which
closely matches the job you are applying for. It is not uncommon to
have several job objectives for each job applied for and sometimes
different resumes.
6
Display Resume:
This selection displays to the screen the current copy of your
resume. Since the screen is not long enough to display the entire
document it is written to the screen in sections.
Other Main Menu Sections:
Print Resume:
A window will appear asking you to select a type of resume.
Students should select the Education format resume because they have
not acquired any significant work experience. A person who has a
track record of work experience should use the Work Format. The
emphasized format will highlight key headings and resume data.
Once you make your selection, ONE.PAGE.RESUME will print your resume
to the attached printer. MAKE SURE your printer is on-line. If there
are options with your printer to select for letter quality or near
letter quality use those for a better looking resume.
As far as we know this product will work on all printers but if not
please let us know through the "User Response Form".
NOTE! Emphasized printing is not currently supported with Laser
Printers. Please use standard printing options.
Create ASCII File:
ASCII file format is the universal file format for transferring files
to other application packages. It may be a good idea, if you have
access to a word processor, to transfer your ASCII ONE.PAGE.RESUME file
for spell checking. ONE.PAGE.RESUME does not support any file
importing unless it is another ONE.PAGE.RESUME file (see appendix
for file descriptions). The ASCII file created will be called
ASC.DAT and will write to the current directory.
HELP Menus:
This selection contains many help screens on preparation of resume
sections and operation of ONE.PAGE.RESUME.
7
DOS Shell:
This option allows you to go to DOS to do some housekeeping or
queries and return to ONE.PAGE.RESUME without interruption of your
session. This is clearly an option for the advanced programmer who
has a good understanding of DOS and working in a DOS subset.
Quitting ONE.PAGE.RESUME
Just as it says this option takes you out of ONE.PAGE.RESUME and back
to DOS. Do not worry about saving any files. ONE.PAGE.RESUME does
this for you automatically.
Please support SHAREWARE and the continued support of this product by
registering it. ONE.PAGE.RESUME went through three version changes in
the past year. If you are registered, you will be notified of the next
version and given the opportunity to upgrade at a reduced price ($5).
